Gulf of Tonkin writing

Even though Vietnam was trying to become communist and be their own country, America Decided to ruin their dreams and try to stop them out of Fear.

On August 2nd 1964 three US ships one being the USS Maddox sailed into the Gulf of Tonkin. It was said that the Captain of the USS Maddox ordered all of the ships to open fire at the Vietnamese communist ships. Even though this incident happened it was never reported to anyone. It was also said that the USS Maddox was shot down by the Vietnam ships. After this incident LBJ stated that “we haven’t yet pulled out, we just pulled in”. The other ship that was effected in this was called “the Turner Joy” on August 3rd 1964 LBJ also stated that what had happened was an act of play and that the US was basically going to not stop going into Vietnam.

The American involvement in this war with the American was very uncalled for. Or so I believe. We could have prevented so many people dying for no good reason. The only reason that the Americans decided to go into Vietnam was because they were scared that communism would spread out into the world and before anyone could stop it, it would be controlling everyone and everything. So the var went on. A lot of trust was lost in this battle both from the Vietcong and the Americans. All of the pain and hurt could have been prevented but instead it was provoked and everything that happened was just bad.

This is my Tonkin in class writing.

Veteran History Project

Reflection:

In the veterans history project we interviewed a veteran that either served in the Vietnam war or any other war. It started out with my humanities class learning about the gulf of tonkin. and all the other aspects that made this project happen. we were then assigned a veteran to interview. The veteran that i interviewed was named Calixto Cabrera. My veteran talked about alot about the negative impacts about his experiences in the Vietnam War. I really learned things that i did not know before and i am really glad that i got this experience to learn more about this war and how it may effect a person.
